MgO
The UCM Group of companies produce Electrical grade Magnesium Oxide which is
used worldwide by leading manufacturers of heating elements for a diverse range
of products for both industrial and domestic applications. Magnesium oxide is
also used for automotive applications in diesel engine glow plugs and in
friction products.
Magnesium oxide has exceptionally good electrical resistance whilst its ability
to permit heat transfer makes it the preferred insulation material for sheathed
heating elements. Electrical Grade MgO is available in different qualities
appropriate for the final application of the element in which it is used. The
operating temperature of the sheath of a heating element, is determined by the
load and heat dissipating conditions. The mean temperature of the insulation
depends on the thermal conductivity of the powder and the distance between
sheath and coil. In normal elements it is not possible to alter the distance
between coil and sheath, consequently the thermal conductivity and
insulation resistance of the powder is of decisive importance for the
insulation resistance.
The group produces a broad range of products with a view to providing customers
with qualities that will satisfy their individual requirements. However since
element design and production practices have a significant effect on the final
properties of the element, the same results as described in this website cannot
be guaranteed. Customers should therefore make their own tests to determine the
individual product type most suited to a particular application. Suggested uses
are based upon general applications by customers over a long period of time.
Established as a producer of fused minerals in 1958, Electro Furnace Products
is the leading supplier of electrical grade magnesia to Europe, Africa and the
Middle East.
In 1996, an investment of over GBP 4.7m increased the plant capacity to 18,000
tonnes per annum making the operation the largest and most advanced plant in the
world for the manufacture of electrical grade magnesia.
Electro Furnace Products produces a comprehensive range of powders for use in Domestic and Industrial heating elements, automotive components and refractory applications.
A progressive research and development policy has ensured that EFP is ready to meet future demands for high performance materials. New products are continually being introduced, with new developments being actively sought to broaden the range of applications.
A comprehensive technical service offers customers free and impartial advice on material selection and subsequent testing as well as specific development for specialised applications. EFP welcome opportunities to evaluate and resolve customer requirements on a mutual joint development basis.
The operation is certified to the ISO 9000 2000 Quality
Assurance standard and customer service is the prime ingredient of EFP's success.

ELEKTRISCHE EIGENSCHAFTEN
Leakage current is measured in-house using a quadrature test method, with a 300V test potential 90° out of phase with the heating voltage. The test elements are straight, self-heated Incoloy 800 roll reduced elements. They are not annealed before testing (sheath 7.18mm Ø, wall thickness 0.5mm, reduced to 6.22mm Ø). Resistor 80/20 Nichrome wire 0.4mm Ø with internal coil 1.52mm Ø.
Specific Insulation Resistance curves are determined on a 9.5mm Ø Incoloy 800* Tube by CSM Tube, element roll reduced to 8mm Ø, with a heated length of 68.5cm having a 3mm external Ø 80/20 Nichrome coil. (* Trade name of Special Metals Group of Companies)
SILIKONISIERTE MASSEN
All electrical grade magnesias can be given a uniform silicone coating. Such coatings provide a high degree of resistance to moisture and greatly improved cold insulation resistance values for low duty elements exposed to conditions of high humidity.
During the manufacturing process elements filled with coated powder can be left unsealed for long periods of time without the danger of moisture pickup.
Since design and manufacturing techniques have a great effect on the final properties of an element, each customer must make their own tests to determine the suitability of silicone coated powder for a particular element application, alternative coatings are available to suit a range of customers manufacturing methods.
The physical properties of silicone coated powder are very similar to those of uncoated powder, but as there is no visual difference between coated and uncoated powder, care must be exercised not to confuse the powders.
WICHTIG
Suggested uses are based upon general and various applications by customers over a long period of time. Unless coated, Magnesium Oxide is hydroscopic and must be stored in dry conditions. All technical information is typical but does not imply any warranty.
Further information is available on request.
